Waterfalls in Cyprus – the most beautiful places for a refreshing break

With over 300 days of cloudless weather per year, Cyprus is one of the sunniest places on the planet. The hot, dry summers and arid scrubland plains give the impression that there are no freshwater bodies, let alone waterfalls. However, if you venture deeper into the heart of the island, into the high mountain forests of the Troodos range, you will immediately feel the refreshing cool air and hear the sound of bubbling underground springs.

In the height of summer, there is nothing better than heading to the mountains along one of the picturesque routes to enjoy the fresh pine-scented air and discover Cyprus's natural treasures — its waterfalls. If you've ever wondered whether Cyprus has any waterfalls, this article will tell you where to find the most beautiful ones and how to get there.

Kaledonia

Located near Platres in the Troodos Mountains, this waterfall is deservedly considered the most famous in Cyprus and one of the most beautiful. It was first discovered by a Scottish expedition in 1878, which is why it has Scottish roots in its name. Its unique natural beauty reminded them of their homeland, so they named it 'Caledonia', the Latin word for 'Scotland'.

Indeed, the emerald moss and lichens covering the dark rocks, the tree roots intertwining like snakes and the cold, crystal-clear water gushing forth all conjure up images of Gallic fairy tales and legends. The Caledonia Waterfall is located at an altitude of 1,330 metres above sea level and is 12 metres high. A 3-kilometre nature trail stretching along the ‘Krios Potamos’ river leads to the waterfall. The name of this river translates as ‘Cold Spring’. The water is cold even in summer and icy in winter when the temperature drops sharply. The route itself is very beautiful and fairly easy, making it ideal for a family walk. Here, you can find unique, endemic species of Cypriot flora, such as orchids, cyclamen and violets. To ensure you don't miss these amazing plants, it is advisable to familiarise yourself with photos and descriptions of them in advance.

Not far from the trail, there is a trout farm and a restaurant where you can sample trout dishes.

Millomeris

The highest waterfall in Cyprus is Millomeris, which literally means 'wet place'. This name perfectly describes the local microclimate. According to another account, the name comes from the word 'mill', which was located nearby long ago. Located at an altitude of around 980 metres, the waterfall is near the village of Pano Platres in the heart of the Troodos Mountains. The waterfall originates from the river 'Krio Potamos', meaning 'cold river'. Indeed, if you want to swim at the waterfall, the water will be cold, even in summer.

There are two ways to reach the waterfall: by car along a dirt road or on foot via a nature trail starting from the village centre. The route is not difficult, but the trail is uneven and rocky in places, so it is best to wear comfortable shoes. It first runs alongside the Krio Potamos River, then deeper into the forest, revealing magical landscapes. The waterfall itself cascades down sheer volcanic rock called gabbro, looking very majestic. It is a great place for a relaxing walk through the forest where you can experience the power of the water and the beauty of Cypriot nature.

The Caledonia and Millomeris waterfalls are very easy to reach from Limassol. Simply follow the Limassol–Troodos road to the village of Pano Platres. The journey takes no more than an hour.

Meso Potamos

Located in the Troodos Mountains at an altitude of 1,000 metres above sea level, the Meso Potamos waterfall is quieter and more secluded. Its name means 'between rivers'. Standing at 7 metres high, the waterfall is located near the village of Moniatis and the ancient Byzantine monastery dedicated to St John the Baptist. Perhaps this is why there is such a feeling of calm and peace here.

Hidden from view by dense pine, plane and oak trees, as well as various herbs and shrubs, the waterfall is a picturesque sight. The dark volcanic rocks and lush vegetation make the waterfall particularly picturesque. To see it, you need to walk along a short but steep forest trail starting from the picnic area of the same name. Here, you can follow a hiking trail, admire the waterfall and enjoy a picnic with a picturesque forest view. You can also combine a trip to the mountains with a pilgrimage by visiting a small, cosy monastery with an ancient history and prayerful atmosphere. The surrounding villages of Moniatis and Pelendri are also worth a visit. The nearest town to the waterfall is Limassol, 35 km (about 40 minutes by car) away.

Adonis Baths

This place amazes with the beauty of its unspoilt nature and the mysterious atmosphere of local myths and legends. It is located near the picturesque mountain village of Kili in Paphos. The Adonis Baths resemble a real oasis, hidden among lush vegetation with clear, turquoise waters over which a light mist rises.

According to legend, it was here that the goddess Aphrodite fell in love with the handsome local youth Adonis. Due to the large influx of tourists in recent years, an admission fee is now charged to visit the waterfall and the adjacent theme park. Tickets for adults cost around €15 and €10 for children under 12. This policy helps control visitor numbers and preserve the local environment.

According to the official website, GPS searches do not always provide the correct route to the waterfall. However, if you follow the road signs from the village of Tala, you will easily find your way.

Kremotis

Not far from Polis Chrysochous in Paphos, in the village of Kritou Terra, there is another unique waterfall called Kremotis. The waterfall takes its name from the nearby river of the same name. Although it is not the highest, the waterfall's uniqueness lies in the fact that it has two tiers. First, the water falls through a cave opening, then it flows down a natural stone ‘tunnel’, forming a small pool below. This nature reserve is home to many endemic species of Cypriot flora and birdlife.

Platanes

The Nicosia area also has its own natural waterfall, although it is smaller than others. It is located not far from the village of Spilia, near the popular tourist destination of Kakopetria. There is a camping and picnic area nearby. There are also many nature trails around Kakopetria. You can also visit a mouflon reserve to see how these animals live in their natural habitat. This has become a local attraction that will appeal to both children and adults.

Did you know? There are several hiking clubs in Cyprus that organise regular hikes in the Troodos Mountains and on the Akamas Peninsula.

ON THE MAP

Cyprus's waterfalls are true natural treasures. They provide life-giving moisture to everything around them and preserve the fragile natural balance of Cyprus. In this day and age, when the island's water resources are dwindling, these natural wonders serve as a reminder of the importance of appreciating and conserving what we have.

If you're looking for a way to cool off in the summer heat, there's no need to live by the sea or go to the beach. Ayia Napa and Protaras certainly deserve a visit and offer plenty to see. Alternatively, you can head to the mountains to discover a different, more mysterious side of the island by visiting any of the places we have described. As you climb its majestic mountains and delve into the forest, you will discover a completely different Cyprus, with waterfalls, volcanic rock formations, and huge boulders covered in emerald moss. Many new and interesting things await you. Perhaps the main advantage of Cyprus is its natural diversity and ability to surprise. Just when you think you know the island well, you suddenly realise that there are still many new and interesting things to discover.
